Sacrifice the Ordinary and Experience the Extraordinary

Posted on June 04, 2010 at 9:42 PM //

I work at a place where you can wear whatever you want every day. Jeans and tennis shoes, no problem. Capris and flip flops, no big deal. The other day we had our Area Director in the office, and it went without saying that we should dress a little nicer while we had visitors; so I did. That morning I was confronted by someone who has worked there at the same job for 42 years. She told me that she vowed to herself she would never dress up for “those people.” All I could think was….

…. this is why you have worked in the same position for 42 years. Albeit this was not the nicest thought, but it provoked even more thoughts of mine. This lady wasn’t willing to sacrifice the ordinary clothes to dress up for one day a year. It made me wonder what extraordinary things she has missed over the last lifetime.

Do we act like this as Christians? I think so. How many times are we not willing to sacrifice the ordinary 15 minutes of half sleep in the morning to get in the Word, or the ordinary 90 seconds before we shove our food into our faces at every meal, or the ordinary third hour of the night on facebook to possibly experience something extraordinary from God? If this lady knew that 40 years ago dressing up for one day could have made all the difference in her career, her income, and her soon retirement do you think she would have dressed up? I hope so. But in my hope, I find that I miss out on opportunities every day that could give place to extraordinary things from God.

I believe it’s time to dress up.
